Several summer construction projects are underway on campus!  Click below to follow our progress!

Despite a very rainy summer in Brevard, work continues on the new Student Plaza as well as a number of other construction and renovation projects around campus.

Student Plaza

Work on the Student Plaza has resumed.  Just before the end of the spring semester, asphalt was removed from a large area between Myers Dining Hall and Moore Science in order to provide for green space in the new Student Plaza. The green space is now being extended to the old boiler house closing the entire area to traffic and providing opportunities to develop gathering spaces over the next year. The new green space will contain various walkways made from the same natural materials that are being used to resurface Alumni Drive and King's Creek Loop.

Road Construction
Athletic Road

Work has also begun on the resurfacing of Alumni Drive and a portion of the King's Creek Loop (the back road from the Alumni House to the Gil Coan Baseball field).  An all natural, environmentally safe, non-toxic product called NatureRoads is being used during the resurfacing process.  Brevard College is the first college in North Carolina to use this product, which has been used extensively by the US Forest Service in the northern and western United States. The process re-uses existing road materials mixed with an enzymatic formula to stabilize the surface and provide a natural road. Asphalt can be applied if desired, but we do not plan to do so in order to test the material. We are excited to introduce this process in Western North Carolina and test it to determine if we can move to a more natural road and path system on campus.

Jones and Beam Residence Halls

On July 5th, faculty, staff and students as well as members of the College's Board of Visitors and Tornado Club participated in the first "Tom Sawyer Day" on campus.  This service day was dedicated to painting the inside lobbies of Jones and Beam residence halls.   Additional "Tom Sawyer Days" are being planned to help beautify the campus.

Other Projects

The student garden beside Myers Dining Hall, which was unfortunately removed to provide adequate drainage for Beam and Myers parking lots, will be reconstructed and replanted. An herb garden, which will service the dining hall, and a walkway will also be added to that area.

The interior of Myers Dining Hall has been repainted as part of the Chartwells food service transition. The international flags have been temporarily removed since renovations to the building will continue through next summer. A new television is being installed that will help communicate activities to the campus community.

The Underground in Coltrane Commons will re-open this semester with Habaneros, a southwest-inspired Mexican grill featuring burritos, tacos, salads and rice bowls. Habaneros will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Coltrane Commons will also offer grab & go sandwiches and salads as well as cappuccino and coffee based drinks and bulk snacks and frozen foods. Snack machines will also be installed around campus in September.
