Cycle NC

BC President David Joyce, his wife Lynne Joyce, and College Trustee Phillip Jerome are gearing up to cycle from the mountains to the coast to raise money and awareness on behalf of Brevard College. Their ride is part of Cycle NC’s 450-mile bike ride from Brevard to Carolina Beach September 29 through October 6.

During the ride, the BC team is asking for individuals to support the College by committing an amount for every mile ridden. Contributions may be directed to help cover equipment and travel costs for a Brevard College athletic team; promote community service through the College’s Office for Multicultural and Service Initiatives; or fund need-based student scholarships through the Brevard College Loyalty Fund.

To contribute, please call 828.884.8315 or e-mail GivetoBC@brevard.edu

Day One:

They started out at 7:45am on Brevard College campus and finished 42 miles later, at 12:00pm in Lake Lure!  Went through Penrose, Etowah, Laurel Park, downtown Hendersonville and through the apple country of Chimney Rock!  It was an awesome ride for them! Lynne Joyce loves the downhill slopes and usually leaves David in her dust!  Fun was had by all!~Christie Cauble

Day Two:

It was a rainy 57 miles today. Thank goodness for Dee Dasburg and Dawn! The two of them are wonderful and have made this trip so easy. They drive the RV, cheer us on and pick the perfect camping spot for a good night's rest. Tonight, we all ate at Pleasant City Wood Fired Grill in down town Shelby. Pizza is a fantastic recovery meal! Calling it a night so we can be ready for 77 miles tomorrow. Shelby to Matthews and a Brevard College event in the evening. ~Lynne Joyce

Day Three:

First stop today. 16 miles. Lots of sunshine. We're loving the ride. Thanks to everyone for your support. Made it to Freedom Park in Charlotte, where we out ran the tornado... Seriously!  But we had the best BC Crew help us through it! We made it to Matthews NC today. 77 miles of part sun, part down pouring rain showers and Tornado warnings. All-in-all, a very good day.  We love being back in our home state and are enjoying the scenery every mile of the way.  See you soon! ~Lynne Joyce

Day Four:

We had to say goodbye to Dee and Dawn today.  They have made our first four days so much fun!  Much love to both of you and many thanks!  We will welcome Wendy Carter in Rockingham to take us the rest of the way to Carolina Beach! Leaving Matthews NC and in 74 miles will be in Rockingham! ~ Lynne Joyce

Ice cold Cheerwine in Lilesville.

15 more miles to go!!!

Wendy Carter joined us in Rockingham today.  We're enjoying Smithfield's Barbeque!  Yum Yum!

 Day Five:

Went through historic Maxton...had a fantastic rest stop!  Thanks to all the Chamber of Commerce members and the civic clubs that make it happen.  We have been welcomed royally in every town!    Now in Pembroke with 18 more miles to go today!  Today was another great day! 68 miles in rain and overcast skies...David is a very happy camper!

We had an official Alumni gathering this evening.  We met Shepard "Shep" Oliver and he spoke highly of Cameron West!~ Lynne Joyce

Somewhere between Maxton and Pembroke.. been seeing this view
a lot!

On our way to dinner via our shuttle wagon!

We're eating at Candy Sue's...who is Phillip Jerome calling???

David is a happy camper!

Day Six:

Today we are on our way to White Lake.  First rest stop, Regan United Methodist Church.  A beautiful church!  In talking with some of the folks here, David discovered that this is Charlie Mercer's home church.  Charlie is a well known minister, now retired to Lake Juneluska.  Friends everywhere!!

Ok possibly the best stop yet!  Pedal power through Lu Mil Vineyard, best homemade jams ever (except for my grandmother's)!  No wine, just Muscadine Cider Slushy...Yummy!  ever heard of Corn on the Cob jelly? You have now!!  It's so much fun visiting this part of the state and there are so many surprises.  We are missing our mountains and all our friends in Brevard!

I know we just stopped but we arrived in Elizabethtown and couldn't resist The Corner Cafe.  We may never make it to White Lake because we are having Granddaddy's homemade ice cream. "Delicious, expensive and fattening," according to the menu!  The last 22 miles today will have to be fast!

Clyde and Wendy taking a break from SAG (Support and Gear) detail for a paddle on White Lake!  As day six comes to a close and we start our nightly coin toss for which restaurant to try, I an thinking about how fast this week has flown by. I am so proud to be a Tarheel!  Our state is beautiful from the mountains to the coast.  We could have flown on our bikes just as fast but then we might have missed all the wonderful sights and really cool people along the way! ~ Lynne Joyce

Last Day:

We're off to Carloina Beach. 17 miles down and taking a quick break in Kelly, NC. We made it!  So so so much fun...love North Carolina!  The beach is beautiful.

Many thanks to our supporters!  Our hearts go out to you for pledging to Brevard College on our behalf.  We thought of each of you every mile of the way.  You are the best!

Hey Phillip... what a joy to share 450 miles with you!  Thanks for all you do for BC!

Thank you, Christie Cauble, for posting my many messages and pictures.  BIG thanks to Dee Dasburg, Dawn Rouse, Wendy and Clyde Carter for being the best SAG crew in the World.  We couldn't have completed this ride without your support and encouragement!

We swam in the ocean and now we are headed home to the mountains! ~ Lynne Joyce
