Office for Students with Special Needs and Disabilities

The Office for Students with Special Needs and Disabilities (OSSND) at Brevard College works to assure access to the College and its programs for students with disabilities. The OSSND coordinates and provides reasonable accommodations, advocates for an accessible and hospitable learning environment, and promotes student self determination.

Students are assisted in understanding their strengths and functional limitations within a postsecondary setting. Students are supported as they develop their ability and their confidence in communicating this information as appropriate to professors or staff.

To be eligible for services and accommodations, students must provide documentation of a disability from an appropriate licensed professional. For more specific information about documentation requirements, please contact the Director of the OSSND.

Reasonable accommodations modify or adjust a course, program, or activity, which provides a person who has a disability with equal access. They include a range of services, equipment, and course alterations. Reasonable accommodations should not fundamentally alter courses, programs, and activities. Reasonable accommodations are based on how a student’s documented disability currently affects him or her. The OSSND works with students and faculty to determine appropriate strategies and accommodations to meet a student’s disability-related needs for each term.

• Testing In A Distraction-Reduced Setting
• Use of a Test Reader
• Use Of A Computer Or Scribe During Written Exams
• Use of Grammar Or Spell Check Assistance
• Note Takers
• Use Of Adaptive Computer Equipment
• Books in Audio Formats Or Via Screen Reader

Information for Prospective Students

Pre-admission services: Prospective students are encouraged to contact the OSSND in the early stages of their college planning. Pre-admission services include meeting with the Director to learn about academic support services and accommodations, appropriate documentation of disability, housing considerations, and transition issues. The admissions process: The admissions process for students with disabilities is the same as for all other students.
