Honors Program

Brevard College Honors Program

The basis of honors education is that the honors student should be continually challenged to reach her or his highest potential as a scholar and a leader.  Courses in the Brevard College Honors Program are designed to be stimulating, unique, and challenging. In addition to or instead of the typical lecture format, discussion periods and independent learning are part of the classroom environment. This environment includes the classroom and the world at large, through experiential and service learning activities. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas within an informed and logical framework, to use creativity and an interdisciplinary approach in problem-solving, and to develop into the well-rounded, complete person that is the hallmark of a liberal arts education.

To complete the Honors Program, students must maintain a minimum 3.30 GPA and at least 19 hours in honors courses during the typical 4-year period of their enrollment at Brevard College. These hours include honors enrichment seminar courses, honors-designated sections of courses, service and mentoring in the community, and a senior project.
  • Enrichment Seminars (ENR):
Four semesters of the ENR seminars (ENR 101H, ENR 102H, ENR 203H, and ENR 204H), one hour each, form an integral part of the Honors experience and are required of Honors students. These courses are seminar, discussion-based courses, and the theme differs each semester.
  • Honors-Designated Courses:
Honors students also complete four designated Honors courses of 3 or 4 hours each. These courses carry the H designation, and most fill general Education Requirements, such as English 111H, Religion 102H, Biology 110H, etc. These courses provide greater depth and more student participation than undesignated courses.
  • Senior Projects:
Senior Honors students prepare and give a public presentation of the results of their senior projects or internships (which can coincide with the senior project required in most majors).   Faculty from each major determine the requirements for this Honors Senior Project and work closely with senior Honor students to achieve a higher level of accomplishment than may otherwise be required of non Honors students.  Many senior internships or senior projects carry an honors designation and 3 units credit.
