For whom was the library named?
The J.A. Jones Library serves as the main library for the educational program of Brevard College. Dedicated in 1967, the library is named for James Addison Jones, founder of the J.A. Jones Construction Company in Charlotte, and a benefactor of the college.
What kind of materials do I have access to in the library?
Access is provided to a variety of information resources to meet the general, instructional, research, and recreational need of the Brevard College community, including 59,000 books, 100,000 e-Books, and 4,100 A-V materials, primarily compact discs, videos and DVDs. The library subscribes to 200 periodicals, and provides access to 24,000 full text journal articles through online databases. Back issues of periodical articles are available in bound volumes or full-text online.
How do I find the materials I need?
The library’s holdings are listed in the online catalog of the Appalachian College Association, which includes the holdings of Brevard and other colleges in North Carolina and adajacent states. Access to the catalog is available at terminals in the library or through the World Wide Web on any computer.
How long can I check out a book?
Most materials check out for 28 days and can be renewed.
How long can I check out a video or DVD?
Videos check out for 28 days; DVDs check out for 7 days.
Can anyone check out library materials?
Students, faculty, and staff of Brevard College may borrow materials from the J.A. Jones Library with a college I.D. card. Local residents of Transylvania County may also check out a limited amount of materials after registering at the circulation desk.
How much are the fines for overdue materials?
Fines are charged @ 25 cents per day for books, recordings, and A-V materials up to a maximum fine of $3.50 per item.
The library is closed, how can I return my books?
There are two book drops in the front of the library for return of materials when the library is closed.
What kind of security system does the library have?
The entrances and exits to the library have 3M security systems. If an alarm sounds, please return to the Circulation Desk.
I know this is an academic library, but what else do you offer?
Jones Library focuses mainly on academic materials, but also offers current magazines, fiction, paperbacks, videos, DVDs, CDs, digital art and music, e-books and e-journals, and wireless Internet access.
What kind of Databases do you offer?
Internet-accessible databases containing indexes, abstracts, and thousands of full-text resources include: Academic Search Premier, Academic Universe, America History & Life, ARTstor, BioOne, Britannica Online, EbscoHost, Early American Imprints, Grove Dictionary of Art/Music Online, Historical Abstracts, Info-Sci Online, JSTOR, Lexis/Nexis, Liebert Online, Literature Online, Literature and Biography Resource Center, The New York Times (current and historical), PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, the Wall Street Journal, and WorldCat.
What is plagiarism?
According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, plagiarism is stealing or passing off ideas or words of another as one's own; using another's production without crediting the source; committing literary theft presented as a new and original idea or product derived from an existing source. What is NC Live?
NC LIVE provides statewide access to thousands of electronic and print resources, databases, research journals, and full text articles. Remote access is also available. Connect to NC LIVE through the library’s web page.
What about electronic journals, where can I find these?
Access to over 24,000 full-text journals is available through TDNET, our electronic journal management service, accessible online.
Where do I make copies?
A photocopier is located adjacent to the Circulation Desk; copies are 10 cents per page. Change for the photocopier is available at the Circulation Desk.
Can I place a flyer on the entrance doors to the library?
All signs posted on the front or back doors of Jones Library will contain Library-related information only. The library provides a bulletin board next to the copier for campus-related and community information flyers and signs.
Can I print something from the computer?
A HP LaserJet printer is available in the reference area for printing from online databases, full-text articles, and the World Wide Web. Please select "Print Preview" to assess your printing needs before printing. Copies printed in the library can be released at the main desk.
How much does printing cost?
The cost of printing at Jones library is 10 cents per page. All those not affiliated with the College must pay at the circulation desk before the print job will be released to the printer.
Brevard College students receive an allotment of $25.00 worth (or 250 pages) of free printing each semester. When this balance is low, students who wish to add to their balance may purchase additional PaperCut Card vouchers in increments of $5.00 (or 50 pages) at the circulation desk in the library or at the business office.
Do you have study rooms?
Two small study rooms, for 1-2 students, are located on the mezzanine. Keys for study rooms are available at the Circulation Desk.
Is there somewhere in the library where I can watch a DVD?
Two small study rooms, for 1-2 students, are located on the mezzanine. One room is equipped with two TV/DVD players. Keys for study rooms are available at the Circulation Desk.
Are cell phones allowed?
Cell phones use is prohibited in Jones Library and ringers should be turned off or silenced. As a courtesy to others please exit the library to make calls.
Where are the restrooms located?
Restrooms are located on the lower level and on the mezzanine.
Can I smoke in the Library?
In accordance with North Carolina law, smoking is not permitted anywhere in the Jones Library building. All other tobacco products are also prohibited in the library.
Can I bring food or drinks into the library?
Food is not permitted in the public areas of the Library at any time. Drinks in spill-proof containers are permitted, at library study tables and carrels only. Restrictions are necessary because the presence of food and drinks have the potential to destroy or damage computer equipment, books, equipment, and furnishings. Spilled drinks should be cleaned immediately with paper towels available in all restrooms.
How do I access the databases if I am not on campus?
Go to the Brevard College homepage; click on the MY BC page; login to MY BC with your regular Brevard College username and password; click on the Library link (on the left hand side); click on the Off Campus link (on the right hand Column under Services). Once on the off campus page click on the desired Database link and if prompted for a username or password, use the name and ID# on your BC ID card:
Username: Your name (example: John Smith or Smith, John).
Password: bv and your 6-digit Brevard College ID number (example: bv123456).
How do I access the wireless in the library?
When searching for a wireless connection on your device choose the BC guest connection (not BC Wireless 1X), once connected, open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox etc.) and the BC wireless access web page will be automatically loaded. Input your email address, click on submit and you will then be able to access the internet. If you are still unable to connect go to the tools menu and click Diagnose Connection Problems.
How do I download an EBook to my personal device?
There are two ways to interact with E-books. View an e-book from any internet accessible device or download it so it is accessible when you are offline. Information, e-book vendor FAQs, and links to tutorials are found on the Quick E-book guide.
How can I access EBSCOhost eBooks and Journal articles on my personal Mobile device?
Log into the mobile version of EBSCOhost on your device by using the same EBSCOhost link you normally use. EBSCOhost automatically recognizes that you are a mobile device user and displays the correct version. If prompted input your username and password:
Username: Your name (example: John Smith or Smith, John).
Password: bv and your 6-digit Brevard College ID number (example: bv123456).
