Environmental Studies

The Environmental Studies (ES) major is truly interdisciplinary. Students train in the humanities, social sciences, economics and government as well as the environmental sciences: ecology, chemistry, biology, physics and geology. Students use disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to develop critical thinking skills that allow them to carefully evaluate evidence and reach sound conclusions. They also develop written and oral communication skills and problem-solving abilities through close contact with our faculty. Our B.A. graduates are prepared to be good stewards of the environment and successfully enter a wide variety of careers or continue their formal training in graduate or professional programs.

Our setting in the N.C. mountains provides a nearly unlimited number of natural laboratories where students experience hands-on learning about the environment.
