While earning a B.S. in Biology at Western Carolina University (79-83) Robert began working for the Nantahala Outdoor Center as a canoe instructor and head guide on the Chattooga River.  With the left side of his brain wrestling with the rigors of scientific methodology, and the right side of his brain figuring out how to run class IV rapids, Robert developed a passion for purposeful experiential education.  He has an appreciation for the well crafted experience and thoughtful reflection which he believes are the bread and butter of teaching quality leadership skills and technical outdoor skills.

After five year of professional river guiding Robert spent four years programming adventure and therapeutic activities for youth at risk, completed his Masters in Outdoor Leadership at Radford University and has been teaching at the college level since 1991.  Robert came to Brevard College in 1999, and has over 25 years of trip leading experience including river and lake expeditions around the U.S, Canada, Nepal, Russia, Mexico, Chile and Argentina.  He most enjoys teaching outdoor living skills, whitewater canoeing, coastal kayaking and risk management for the outdoor professional.
