Fall Mountain Journeys

Mountain JourneysIn Brevard’s backyard lie two amazing places: Pisgah National Forest and Dupont State Forest. For Student Orientation, each student will be able to choose from an array of activities happening in this area. What follows is a brief description of each activity that the student may choose from at this year’s orientation. No experience is necessary, as each group will be led by professional instructors. Groups will also be co-led by at least one student, who will help instruct and also be a reference for participants on the trip to ask any questions about life on campus, professors, classes, laundry…you get the idea.

Please be sure to register your top 3 choices for Mountain Journeys. Each trip has a maximum capacity, and while we will do our best, not everyone will get their first choice. All land-based trips require closed-toed shoes (tennis shoes or boots), and water-based trips require sandals with back straps. Unless noted, all technical gear will be provided.

Canoeing
Venture to Cascade Lake for an afternoon of tandem fun, as you and a friend navigate canoes around one of the area’s most beautiful reservoirs.

Horse Back Riding
Take a horseback ride in Pisgah National Forest. This one hour trip guided by the Pisgah Forest Riding Stables offers a great ride and views through beautiful scenery.

Mall Trip
Not an outdoor person? For those individuals that don’t want an outdoor adventure, we will be offering a trip to one of Asheville’s malls.

Mountain Biking
Brevard boasts some of the best mountain biking in the country. Join our experienced leaders for an afternoon out on the trails. All levels are welcome to ride, but mountain biking experience is highly recommended. Must bring own bike (rentals available at Sycamore Cycles).

Rock Climbing
Pisgah National Forest features one of the largest concentrations of high-quality rock climbing in the Southeast. All gear and instruction is provided for a half-day of top-roping on one of Pisgah’s many granite rock faces.

Sea Kayaking
Though Brevard is not located on the coast, we still have many lakes and rivers that can be seen best from the bow of a 17-foot sea kayak. The sea kayaking trip will be an afternoon out on the water.

Sliding Rock
Nature’s water park awaits your arrival! Better than your plastic slip-and-slide at home, Sliding Rock offers a low-incline waterfall into a refreshingly-cool pool of water.

Waterfall Hikes
Join our resident waterfall enthusiasts for a day hike to see just a few of the 250+ waterfalls in Transylvania County. The hike will be moderate, during which you will stop for a picnic lunch and experience some amazing views.

Whitewater Rafting
Come with us to the French Broad River, as we raft one of the Southeast’s classic Class III whitewater runs with Nantahala Outdoor Center, one of the largest and most well-known outfitters in the world.

Zip Line
Ride through the trees on a zip line at one of our local mountain lodges, Earthshine. This trip will take you on a 2.5-3 hour journey flying on a zip line through the mountains and trees.
