Karen Atkins grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and went to Presbyterian College in South Carolina.  She graduated in 1998 with a B.A. in Religion with a Psychology minor.  Karen had spent summers throughout her youth in the WNC area, so was drawn to move here permanently after she finished college.  In 2002, Karen earned her M.A. in Education in School Counseling from Western Carolina University.  In August of that year, she began working at Brevard College in the Office of Admission.  Karen has a passion for liberal arts education that has grown since her own college experience.  She feels that some of Brevard College unique qualities are its environmental and artistic focus, opportunities for student leadership on campus, and its close-knit community.  In her spare time, Karen enjoys seeing live music with her husband, practicing yoga, relaxing at Lake Lure, and playing with her children (her dogs!).

Carl is from Asheville, NC and graduated in 2003 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Management & Society. Carl was attracted to Brevard College because of its beautiful location, small community atmosphere, and unique academic opportunities. He enjoys meeting new people and sharing what makes Brevard special with prospective families. In his free time, Carl enjoys mountain biking and backpacking in the area and venturing abroad to seek new opportunities for outdoor adventure.

Betty Kay Brookshire was born in Newport News, Virginia and eventually ending up attending Brevard College as did her husband and three of her four children.  Before beginning work at Brevard College in July 1998, Betty Kay was the youth director at First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville.  Betty Kay sees working with young adults as her “calling in life.”   Her love for and dedication to Brevard College have given her the energy to continue to encourage students to “take a look, give us a chance, come see what we (Brevard College) can do for you.”  In her spare time, Betty Kay enjoys spending time with family and grandchildren, going to the beach, knitting, making cards and singing in her church choir.


Cara Nash (2006)

Cara Nash was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  She received her B.A. in Environmental Studies from Brevard College in 2003.  After graduating, she taught high school students and discovered her passion for working with young adults.  In the summer of 2006, Cara was given the opportunity to return to Brevard College.  Since then, she has continued to inform prospective students and their families about the unique experience that Brevard College has to offer.  Cara believes some of Brevard’s strengths are its location, strong academics, and family atmosphere.  In her time away from the college, Cara enjoys playing in the woods, listening to good music, and spending time with friends and family.
