FAFSA

INFORMATION ABOUT IRS AND FAFSA

If at all possible, students and parents should file their 2012 federal income tax return 1 or 2 weeks before filing the FAFSA.

Students and parents should use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if at all possible when completing the FAFSA.  It is best to have a copy of the tax return with you when filing the FAFSA to make sure the address used on the return is entered into the IRS Data Retrieval Tool – it is part of the validation process for the tax filer who is retrieving the data.

If students and parents have NOT already submitted their taxes or if their 2012 federal income tax information is not available at the time the file the FAFSA, they can either estimate the information or enter it from the copy of their return that they will later submit to the IRS.  Once the information has been submitted and is available the parents should correct the FAFSA by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

Please make sure that the form is signed with the proper PIN numbers.  The student should have a PIN and the parent should have a PIN in order to sign the FAFSA.
