Buffaloes Sweep Tornados in Tuesday Double-Header
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s baseball team struggled at the plate on Tuesday afternoon, as the Tornados dropped both games of a double-header to the Milligan College Buffaloes at Gil Coan Field.
The loss drops BC to 9-20 overall on the year, as Milligan College improves to 14-16 overall with the sweep.
Game 1: Milligan 7, Brevard 1
In game one, the Milligan College Buffaloes used a four run second inning and held the Tornados offense at bay with only six hits to come away with the 7-1 win.
The Tornados got on the board first, as lead-off hitter Brice Warner scored from second on a Matt Rose single to left-center to put the Tornados up 1-0 after one inning of play.
However, the Buffaloes would score the next seven runs and hold the Tornados to five hits over the remaining six innings of play to pick up the 7-1 win.
The Buffaloes pulled ahead for good in the top of the second, as they pushed across four runs on three hits and one BC error.
Milligan added a run in the top of the fourth on a Dallas Crouch RBI single to right and two more runs in the top of the seventh on three hits to put the game out of reach.
The loss went to BC hurler Ryan Toney (2-3), who gave up five runs on eight hits while walking five Milligan hitters in six innings of work.
The win went to Milligan’s Todd Caldwell, as the lefty went the distance, allowing one run on six hits while striking out seven hitters in the seven inning affair.
At the plate for the Tornados, freshman third-baseman Stephen Mullis was 2-3. Fellow classmate Matt Rose was 1-3 with an RBI single. Spencer Linn and Zac Williams were 1-3, while Justin Frady was 1-2 for the game.
For Milligan College, centerfielder Baker DeCamp was 3-5 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Short-stop Brian Busby was also 3-5 with a double and two RBIs, while third-baseman Spencer Street was 2-4 with two runs scored for game one.
Game 2: Milligan 6, Brevard 2
In game two of the twin bill, the Tornados offense again disappeared in the middle innings of the game, as BC managed six hits for the game, with only three hits in the final five innings of play.
After Milligan College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a Justin Motte RBI single up the middle in the top of the first inning, the Tornados answered with a run of their own in both the bottom of the first and second innings.
In the bottom of the first, lead-off hitter Brice Warner drew a walk to start off the inning. Second-baseman Adam Arrowood then doubled down the left field line, plating Warner who scored all the way from first on the play to knot the score up at 1-1.
In the second, BC took a 2-1 advantage as Warner hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Spencer Linn from third, who had led off the inning with a single.
However, the Buffaloes answered with three runs in the top of the fourth as short-stop Brian Busby had an RBI triple and then later scored on a throwing error by the Tornados. Designated hitter Dallas Crouch then drove in Motte from second on a double to left field, to put Milligan up 4-2.
Milligan added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, by way of two hits and a BC error to push their lead to four runs at 6-2.
The win went to Milligan College’s Jon Stoudt, as he gave up two runs on five hits over four innings of action.
The loss went to the Tornados Brandon Sleezer (1-1), as the junior right-hander allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks in four innings of work.
Arrowood was 2-3 with a double and an RBI at the plate for BC, while Warner was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Linn was 1-3 with a run scored, while Zac Williams was 1-3 at the dish for the Tornados.
Milligan’s DeCamp was 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored in game two, while Justin Motte was 3-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Brian Busby was 2-5 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
The Tornados (9-20) will hit the road on Saturday, March 29, as they will travel to Jefferson City, T.N. to square off with the Eagles of Carson-Newman College. The weekend series will begin with a double-header on Saturday afternoon, with the first game slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
