Lenoir-Rhyne Finishes Off the Tornados For Series Sweep

Hickory, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s baseball team dropped their seventh game in a row on Sunday afternoon, as the Bears powered past the Tornados to win game three of the weekend series 18-5 at Bears Stadium.

The loss drops the Tornados to 4-9 on the young season, while the Bears improve to 7-8 on the year with the sweep.

The Bears started the slugfest early, scoring 2-0 runs in the bottom of the first inning by way of a two-run homerun by Daniel Ford, who sent the ball sailing over the right center field wall.

The Tornados cut the lead in half in the top of the second, as shortstop Mitch Hefner singled to center to score Chris White from second and put the score at 2-1.

However, the Bears scored 12 runs over the next three innings on 11 hits and one BC error to take a demanding 14-2 lead into the start of the sixth inning.

The Tornados pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth on yet another Mitch Hefner single to center, this time plating Justin Frady and Seth Corliss, who had both reached base on a base-on-balls earlier in the inning.

After the Tornados Matt Rose scored in the top of the eighth inning on a fielding error, the Bears scored three in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 18-5 and put the game away heading into the top of the ninth.

The win went to the Bears’ Justin Crowell (2-2) who went six innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and striking out seven BC hitters.

Sophomore lefty Shane Galloway (1-1) suffered his first loss on the year, as Galloway went 3.0 innings giving up eight runs on seven Lenoir-Rhyne hits.

Short-stop Mitch Hefner was 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while senior Chris White was 2-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Senior catcher Seth Corliss was 1-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored, while M.A. Dozier was 1-1 on the day, picking up a hit as a pitch hitter in the ninth.

The Bears, who pounded out 18 hits on the afternoon, were led by Evan Taylor (3-5, HR, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored), Daniel Ford (3-3, BB, HR, SF, 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored) and Zach Glass (2-4, HR, SF, 4 RBIs and one run scored).

The Tornados will look to get back on the right track on Tuesday afternoon, as they return home to play host to Virginia Intermont. The double-header will start at 1 p.m. at Gil Coan Field on the campus of Brevard College.
