No. 24 Francis Marion Defeats Tornados 5-2

Florence, S.C. – The Brevard College baseball team played their third game in two days on Sunday afternoon, as they played arguably their toughest opponent so far this season in No. 24 nationally ranked Francis Marion.

The Tornados jumped out to an early lead, but couldn’t hold off Francis Marion as the home team battled back to defeat BC, 5-2.

The Tornados scored their only two runs of the game in the first inning, as Brice Warner lead-off the game with a single. After both Luke Lovelace and Seth Corliss popped out, first-baseman Justin Frady doubled down the left field line to drive in Warner all the way from first. Sophomore catcher Josh Miller than singled to center, plating Frady and in giving the Tornados an early 2-0 lead.

However, that would be the only runs the Tornados would push across for the game, as Francis Marion’s trio of Kalgstein, Paul and Farry held the Tornados scoreless in the final eight innings, as they allowed only six hits, two walks and struck out 11 from the second inning on.

Francis Marion overcame the early 2-0 deficit, as they scored one run in the bottom of the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings to pick up the 5-2 win.

Leading the way for the Tornados at the plate was senior Justin Frady, who went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, and Josh Miller, who went 1-3 with an RBI. Corliss and Lovelace both had two hits on the day.

Francis Marion, who is now 7-1 overall, was led by shortstop Phelps, as he went 2-3 with a home-run. Centerfielder Greene went 3-3 on the day with two RBI’s, one run scored and a stolen base. Fellow outfielder Asbill had a good day at the plate, going 3-4 with a double, an RBI, one run scored and a stolen base.

As a team Francis Marion had four stolen bases for the game, as they sled in safely in 4-of-5 attempts.

Paul (1-0) got the win for the home team, as he went 3.0 innings allowing only four hits, one walk and striking out five. Farry picked up the save, his fourth of the season.

Ryan Toney (0-1) got the loss for the Tornados, as he went 6.0 strong innings giving up four runs on nine hits. Although Toney struck out five, he struggled with his control as he issued four walks, had a hit batsman, and accounted for four wild pitches on the day.

The Tornados (1-2) will open up their 2008 home slate on Tuesday, February 15, when they will play host to the Crusaders of North Greenville University. The double-header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Gil Coan Field on the campus of Brevard College.
