Tornados Drop Final Two Road Games of Season
Johnson City, T.N. – The Brevard College men’s baseball team wrapped up their 2008 road contests on Wednesday afternoon, as the Tornados dropped both games of the double-header against Milligan College in Johnson City, T.N. The Tornados blew an early lead in game one, falling to the Buffaloes 5-4. In game two, Milligan came away with the 11-0 win in only six innings of play.
Game 1: Milligan 5, Brevard 4
In the opening game of the twin bill, the Tornados jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Milligan pushed across four runs in the final inning of play to come away with the 5-4 come from behind victory.
BC scored two runs in the top of the first on a Seth Corliss sacrifice fly to centerfield and a Josh Miller double, to go on top of the Buffaloes 2-0 early.
Milligan College cut the Tornados lead in half on a Dustin Ford RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning, putting the score at 2-1 with three innings to play.
The Tornados pushed their lead up to three at 4-1 in the top of the fifth, as BC scored two runs on a Stephen Mullis single.
However, Milligan College would not go away as the Buffaloes rallied in their final at bat, scoring four runs on four hits to pick up the 5-4 victory.
The win went to Milligan’s Todd Caldwell, as the starter gave up four runs, only two of which wear earned, on eight hits while striking out seven hitters in seven innings of work.
BC right-hander Ryan Toney (2-5) was saddled with the loss, as he gave up one run on two hits in 0.1 innings of relief work.
Brevard junior starter Seth Laughter got a no-decision, as the right-hander allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits over 6.1 innings of action.
At the plate, freshman first-baseman Stephen Mullis was 2-3 with two RBIs, while Miller was 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Right fielder Adam Arrowroot was 2-3 with a run scored, while Luke Lovelace was 1-4 with a double and two runs scored for the game.
Game 2: Milligan 11, Brevard 0 (6)
In game two, the Milligan College Buffaloes turned up the offense, scoring 11 runs on 10 hits to pick up the 11-0 win over the Tornados.
Milligan scored three runs in the first, third and sixth innings to help pull away from the Tornados and pick up the win in six innings by way of the 10 run rule.
BC struggled offensively from the get-go, as the Tornados had three hits on the game, with all three hits coming in different innings.
Milligan catcher Alex Bush hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the home team the 11-0 lead and the early 10-run rule victory.
Lucas Henderson picked up the shutout win for the Buffaloes, as he allowed three hits while striking out six hitters over six innings of work.
BC’s Matt Castro (2-3) picked up the loss, as the right-hander gave up four runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in two-innings of work.
Senior Jesse Swain was 1-2, while fellow classmate Seth Corliss was 1-3 for the game. The only other BC hit came by way of junior third-baseman Spencer Linn, who finished 1-2 for the game.
The Tornados (10-35) will wrap up their 2008 season this weekend, as they will host Erskine College in a three-game series beginning on Friday. The first-game of the weekend series will be on Friday at 3 p.m. at Gil Coan Field.
