Tornados Drop Two to Virginia Intermont on Thursday Afternoon
Bristol, Va. – The Brevard College men’s baseball team was on the road on Thursday afternoon, as the Tornados dropped both games of the double-header to the home team Virginia Intermont. The Cobras won game won 8-6 and then defeated the Tornados in five innings in game two by the score of 11-1.
Game 1: Virginia Intermont 8, Brevard 6
In game one, the Tornados jumped out to an early 4-0 lead only to have Virginia Intermont come back from behind to pick up the 8-6 win.
BC got four runs in the top of the first, as senior catcher Seth Corliss hit a bases clearing grand slam over the left field wall to put the Tornados up 4-0 early.
However, Virginia Intermont answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning, as the Cobras knocked out five hits and drew two walks to knot the score up at 4-4.
The Tornados regained the lead in the top half of the second, as sophomore designated hitter Josh Miller had an RBI single to score junior Brice Warner and put BC back up on top 5-4.
The Cobras then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, as Stearett had a singled to center to plate two and give Virginia Intermont their first lead of the game at 6-5.
Virginia Intermont added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Steel and Grimm hit back-to-back homeruns to put the Cobras ahead by three heading into the final inning of play.
The Tornados battled back in their last at bat to score one run on Spencer Linn RBI single, but fell just short losing the road contest 8-6.
The win went to Virginia Intermont’s Stargardt, as the starter allowed six runs on nine hits for the game.
Sophomore Shane Galloway (4-6) was handed the loss, as the left-hander gave up eight runs, six of which were earned, on 12 hits over 5.1 innings of work.
BC was led at the plate by Corliss, who was 2-4 with a grand slam, a double, 4 RBIs, and a run scored, and Miller, who finished the game 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Linn was 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
Game 2: Virginia Intermont 11, Brevard 1 (5)
In game two, the Cobras used a nine run third to put the Tornados away 11-1 in five innings of play.
After Virginia Intermont took an early 1-0 lead, the Tornados tied the score up at 1-1 on a Stephen Mullis RBI double in the second.
However, Virginia Intermont scored nine runs in the third inning, highlighted by a Stearett double which drove in three RBIs and a Barfield double which plated two, giving the Cobras a demanding 10-1 lead.
The Cobras added a run in the fourth inning by way of Coleman RBI double, putting the home team up 11-1 heading into the fifth inning.
With the Tornados unable to push across a run in the fifth, the game was called due to the 10 run rule which is applied in the rules of NAIA.
Virginia Intermont’s Bedingfield picked up the win, as he allowed one run on three hits over five innings, striking out three BC hitters along the way.
Junior right-hander Spencer Linn (1-7) took the loss, as he gave up nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings of action.
BC freshman Mullis was 1-2 with a double and an RBI at the plate, while Corliss was 1-2 with a double and a run scored. The other Tornado hit came off the bat of Miller, who was 1-2.
The Tornados (10-33) will have the next six days off, as BC will not return to game play until Wednesday, April 23, when they will play on the road at Milligan College. The double-header is slated for a 5 p.m. start time.
