Tornados Shutout Anderson University For 4-0 Win
Anderson, S.C. – The Brevard College men’s baseball team picked up their second win of the season over the Anderson University Trojans on Thursday afternoon, as the Tornados shut out the Trojans for the 4-0 victory.
The Tornados rode the arm of BC starting hurler Ryan Toney (2-2), as he allowed only three hits over 7.2 innings of action while striking out five Trojan hitters to pick up the win.
Brevard got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning, as senior second-baseman Jessie Swain led off the inning with a single down the left-field line. Fellow senior Luke Lovelace then grounded out to third-base advancing Swain into scoring position. However, the Trojan first-baseman made an error on the play, which allowed Swain to come around and score to put BC up 1-0.
The Tornados added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth to help secure the win. Designated Matt Rose led off the inning with a double to right field. After Zac Williams entered the game to pitch run for Rose, short-stop Mitch Hefner laid down a bunt for a hit to but BC runners on first and third with no outs.
After Hefner advanced to second on a Spencer Linn groundout, left-fielder Mike Jones reached on a throwing error by the Anderson third-baseman, which also allowed Williams to score from third.
BC’s Lovelace put two more runs on the board for the Tornados, as with two outs, he doubled down the right field line to plate both Hefner and Jones and put BC up 4-0.
Right handed hurler Matt Castro (2-1, SV 1) got the last four outs of the game for the Tornados, to pick up his second save of the season.
The loss went to Anderson’s Brady Peele, who went eight innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out five.
At the plate five different BC hitters had a hit on the day – Lovelace (1-3, 2B, 2 RBIs), Justin Frady (1-3), Rose (1-3, 2B), Hefner (1-3, run) and Swain (1-2, run).
For the Trojans, designated hitter Matt Hill was 2-3, while centerfielder Derek Hipp was 1-4.
With the win the Tornados improve to 8-16 overall, while the loss drops the Trojans to 10-24 on the year.
The Tornados (8-16) will jump back into SAC play tomorrow afternoon, as they will host the Newberry College Indians at 2 p.m. at Gil Coan Field on the campus of Brevard College.
