Tornados Storm Through Anderson With 8-3 Win
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s baseball team used both the bats and a strong pitching performance from starter Ryan Toney on Thursday afternoon, to storm through the Trojans of Anderson University with an 8-3 win.
With the win, the Tornados move to 5-9 on the season and 3-0 at home this season.
The Tornados got on the board first in the third inning, as centerfielder Brice Warner led off the inning with a triple to right center field. Warner then scored on a passed ball to put BC up 1-0.
Brevard added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, as senior Chris White led off the inning with a double to left field. Third-baseman Spencer Linn then tried to sacrifice White over to third, when an errant throw by the pitcher to first base allowed Linn to reach base safely and White to score all the way from second and put the Tornados up 2-0.
Anderson University got a run back in the top of the fifth inning, as Patrick West hit a shot over the left field wall to put the score at 2-1.
However, in the bottom of the fifth the Tornados pushed their lead to 5-1, pushing across three runs in the inning. First-baseman Justin Frady started things off with a double down the right field line. After catcher Josh Miller was hit by a pitch, both Miller and Frady advanced a base with a wild pitch, putting two runners in scoring position with only one out. Shortstop Mitch Hefner hit a ground ball back to the pitcher for out number two, while White drew a base-on-balls to load the bases for Linn.
Linn hit a shot up the middle to drive in Frady from third. Leftfielder Zac Williams then drew a walk, plating Miller and leaving the bases loaded. Lead off hitter Brice Warner then drew another walk, this time plating White and putting the Tornados up 5-1 heading into the sixth inning.
Anderson pushed across a run in the top of the seventh to cut the BC lead to 5-2, however, the Tornados put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead 8-2.
The Trojans added another run in the eighth before BC reliever Matt Castro settled down and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to give the Tornados the 8-3 win.
BC hurler Ryan Toney (1-1) scored his first win of the season, going 6.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four Trojan hitters.
The loss went to the Trojans’ Brady Peele (0-2) who pitched the third and fourth innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Leading the way for BC at the plate was Spencer Linn, who was 2-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and two stolen bases. Brice Warner was 2-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Seth Corliss was 3-5 with a double and an RBI.
Justin Frady was 2-5 with a double and a run scored, while fellow senior Chris White was 1-3 with three runs scored.
For Anderson, shortstop Patrick West was 2-3 with a homerun, while Andrew Davis was 1-4 with an RBI.
The Tornados will be back in action at home this weekend, when they will play a three-game series with the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University. The Tornados will play a double-header on Saturday afternoon, with the first game starting at 12 noon at Gil Coan Field.
