Brevard College Men’s Basketball Team Visits Local Elementary Students

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team had a big surprise for the students of Pisgah Forest Elementary School on Friday afternoon, as the Tornados showed up at the school to work with and read to the students.

Head Coach Mike Jones and team members along with Tommy Twister visited and worked with the students in the kindergarten, first, second, and third grade classrooms. The Brevard College student-athletes helped the students with projects ranging from reading and math to building towers and drawing penguins.

“Our guys really enjoy participating at the schools and interacting with the children,” said Coach Jones. “It’s something that they look forward to every year.”

This was the first day of a program that will be held for the remainder of the school year, in which the student-athletes on both the men and women’s basketball teams will be involved with the students in the K-5 classrooms working in different capacities such as mentoring, tutoring, and assisting in everyday classroom activities.

“We feel honored to participate in community service efforts such as this,” continued Coach Jones. “This is the beginning of an ongoing project in which the men and women’s basketball teams from Brevard College will be utilized in the different classrooms throughout the rest of the school year.”

Brevard College, with an enrollment near 700 students, is located in Brevard, N.C. The Tornados are in their second year as NCAA Division II provisional members and will look to compete as full fledged NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference members beginning in the Fall of 2008.
