Lenoir-Rhyne Holds Off Brevard, 68-61
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team searched for their first win this season over a SAC opponent at home on Wednesday night, as they hosted SAC member Lenoir-Rhyne at Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados went toe-to-toe with the defending SAC Champions before the Bears’ hit their free throws down the stretch to hold off the Tornados and capture a 68-61 win.
The loss drops the young Brevard team to 2-10 on the year, while the Bears’ improve to 9-3 overall on the season.
Both teams started out slow offensively, as Brevard held a slight 10-8 advantage at the 13:04 mark of the first half. However, the Bears’ would get a three-pointer by Reggie Brantton giving them the lead, which they would not surrender for the rest of the game.
The Tornados kept the game close and finished the first half on a 5-0 run to cut the Bears’ lead to five points at 34-29 going into the halftime intermission.
Although the Tornados shot 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the floor in the second half, the Bears’ had an answer to ever BC run and held off the Tornados for the final 20 minutes of play.
Leading the way for BC was sophomores Andrew Freeman with 15 points and Jonathan Whitson with 14 points. Junior forward Joseph Chilton had 11 points and pulled down a team high eight rebounds on the night.
For Lenoir-Rhyne forward Josh Kindred had a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Josh Rudder was the only other Bear in double figures, as he had 13 points on the night, going 4-of-5 from the free throw line late in the second half to help seal the win for the Bears.
The Tornados will hit the road for their next four games, starting the road trip this Saturday, January 12, when they will travel to Harrogate, T.N. to square off with the Railsplitters’ of Lincoln Memorial University.
