Mars Hill’s Pressure to Much, As Tornados Fall 89-67
Misenheimer, N.C. – Having lost last night to the host school Pfeiffer University in their Bobby Lutz Invitational opener, the Brevard College men’s basketball team took on SAC opponent Mars Hill College in the consolation game on Saturday afternoon. The Tornados continued their rough month of November, as they fell to the Lions, 89-67, in Merner Gymnasium on the campus of Pfeiffer University.
The loss drops BC to 0-4 on the year, while Mars Hill moves to .500 at 2-2 on the season.
For the second straight game, BC jumped out to an early lead, this time taking a 25-12 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. After, the Tornados pushed their lead to 14 points; Mars Hill called a time-out with eight minutes to go in the first half.
Coming out of the time-out the Lions set up their full-court press and pounced on the inexperience and youth of the Tornados, putting together a run of their own and taking the lead at 32-31 with a little under four minutes left in the opening period.
Mars Hill continued to pressure the Tornados for the remainder of the half and took a 46-38 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Lions would not relinquish the lead in the final 20 minutes of play, as BC continued to try to storm its way back getting as close as six points with a little over 10 minutes to go in the game.
However, the Lions pressure proved to be too much as they forced the Tornados into committing 27 turnovers for the game and held off BC for the 89-67 win.
Again leading the way for the Tornados was sophomore forward Jonathan Whitson, who again had his season-high 17 points, while also pulling down six rebounds for the game.
Sophomore newcomer Andrew Freeman followed up his 14 point performance last night versus Pfeiffer, with 16 points on Saturday afternoon. Point guard Cody Siniard poured in 10 points for BC, as he went 4-of-4 from the field, including going 2-of-2 from behind the three-point line.
Junior forward Joseph Chilton led Brevard with 11 rebounds, as he also posted 8 points for the afternoon.
The Lions were led by junior Jordan Skinner who had a team high in both points and rebounds with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Saturday afternoon’s contest, which was not a scheduled match up, was just the first of three contests between the two schools this year, as BC is playing a full SAC schedule this season.
The Tornados (0-4) will be looking to pick up their firs win when they head back out on the road for their fifth-straight game on Monday, November 26, when they travel to Bristol, Va. to face off with Virginia Intermont College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
