Tornados Fall To No. 13 Alaska-Anchorage in Season Opener

Anchorage, Alaska – The Brevard College men’s basketball team opened up its 2007-08 regular season on Friday night, some 4,300 miles away from home in the Great White North of Alaska. The Tornados came out ice cold and couldn’t not catch up, as the No. 13 Seawolves defeated BC, 80-53 in the packed out Wells Fargo Sports Complex on the campus of University of Alaska-Anchorage.

The loss drops BC to 0-1 on the season, while Anchorage-Alaska improved to 1-0 overall.

Again the Tornados shooting woes continued in the first half, as BC struggled from the floor, shooting 22.7 % (5-of-22) from the field including 1-of-9 from the three-point arc.

The Seawolves took advantage of the cold shooting of the Tornados to run out to an early double-digit lead and would not look back, taking a 38-16 lead into the halftime break.

The second half of play was fairly even as the Tornados went toe-to-toe with the Seawolves as both teams shot over 46% from the floor. After their dismal first half, the Tornados bounced back behind sophomore point guard Cody Siniard’s nine second half points and three assists to shoot 46.2% from the field. Sophomore Jonathan Whitson added eight points of his own in the second period, as BC scored 37 points in the final 20 minutes of play.

Whitson led the Tornados with 16 points and six rebounds, while Siniard was the only other BC player in double-digits with 11 points.

Junior Sean Ferretti had five points on the night, as did sophomore Shane Galloway. Sophomore Andrew Freeman pulled down six rebounds in 26 minutes of play.

The Seawolves were led by pre-season All-American candidate Carl Arts who had 20 points and 13 rebounds on the night, while the 6’8” McCade Olsen contributed 18 points and nine rebounds from the center position.

Fellow senior starters Chris Bryant, a transfer from Division I Drake University, and Cameron Burney netted 16 and 12 points, respectively, with each connecting on four three-pointers in the game.

As part of their trip to Alaska, the men’s basketball team will play the Seawolves again tomorrow night as part of a back-to-back deal with UAA. The game is scheduled for an 11 p.m. ET tip-off.
