Tornados Fall to Pfeiffer in First Round of Bobby Lutz Invitational
Misenheimer, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team played their third straight game on the road and their first game in the lower 48 stats on Friday night, falling to the Pfeiffer University Falcons, 99-65, in the first round of the Bobby Lutz Invitational tournament hosted by Pfeiffer University.
Despite BC’s best shooting night of the young 2007-08 season, Pfeiffer proved to be on mark from three-point range for most of the night, connecting on 17-of-45 attempts, to score the double-digit victory.
The loss drops the Tornados to 0-3 on the season, while the win places Pfeiffer at 1-3 on the year.
The Tornados jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first half, only to have the home team go on an 18-0 run over the next four minutes to put them ahead for good.
The Falcons led Brevard, 48-31, behind nine three-point baskets in the opening 20 minutes.
The second half saw both teams filling the net, as the Falcons shot 48.6 percent (18-of-37) from the floor, including hitting eight three-pointers, while the Tornados connected on 22-of-43 shot attempts, 55 percent, hitting five three-point baskets of their own in the final 20 minutes.
However, the Falcons were able to increase their lead, as they took 34 more shots then Brevard, taking advantage of 28 BC turnovers, as well as picking up 23 second chance points off of offensive rebounds.
Coach Jones’ squad had three players in double-digit figures in scoring led by sophomore sensation Jonathan Whitson, who had 17 points. Whitson has scored in double-digit figures in all three of the Tornados games this season.
Fellow sophomores Andrew Freeman and Shane Galloway each had good shooting nights, as Freeman went 4-of-6 from the floor for 14 points, while Galloway contributed 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Clyde Chapman led Pfeiffer with 18 points on the night, while Thomas Carr and Chris Woods each had 17 points.
The Tornados will play Mars Hill College at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon in the Bobby Lutz Invitational tournament.
