Tornados Lose on the Road to Erskine College
Due West, SC – The Brevard College men’s basketball team played their third straight game on the road and their second game in two nights on Thursday night, as they faced off with the Flying Fleet of Erskine College in Due West, S.C.
The Tornados would suffer a scoring drought midway through the second half of play, ultimately allowing Erskine to pull away for the 64-46 victory.
Having played and fallen to the Flying Fleet in an exciting finish back on December 8, the Tornados looked to seek some redemption on Thursday night on the road in Due West, SC.
Both teams came out cold, as neither team could make a basket for the first 3:40 of the contest. BC’s Joseph Chilton started the scoring off hitting an open lay-up down low in the paint to give BC an early 2-0 lead.
Erskine would answer back with a lay-up of their own at the 15:03 mark to knot the score up at 2-2, and would set the tone of the first half as both teams stayed within striking range of each other.
A lay-up by Erskine’s T.J. Taylor at the 7:02 mark gave the Flying Fleet an 18-16 lead which they would not surrender for the final 33 minutes of play. Erskine would outscore the Tornados 14-7 in the final seven minutes of the first half giving the home team a 32-23 advantage at the halftime break.
The Tornados would come out of the gates in the second half, cutting the Erskine lead to three points at 41-38 at the 13:06 mark, only to have the air go out of their sails as BC went ice cold over the next 7:47 going scoreless during that time span.
Erskine capitalized on the Tornados offensive woes, extending their lead to 19 points at the 6:59 mark and pushing it up as high as 22 points in the closing seconds of the game.
The Tornados were led by sophomore Shane Galloway who had 20 points off the bench, connecting on 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line. Junior Joseph Chilton was the only other Tornado in double-digits scoring with 10 points. Junior wing Sean Ferretti had a game-high 12 rebounds on the night, a season-high.
Erskine was led by guard Brandon Wright, who had 31 points as he had the hot hand from the three-point line, connecting on 8-of-12 attempts. Fellow backcourt mate T.J. Taylor finished with 10 points on the night.
On the night Brevard shot 33.3 percent from the floor, while Erskine only shot 36.2 percent. However, the Flying Fleet shot 19 free throws on the night compared to the Tornados six foul shot attempts.
The Tornados fall to 2-13 overall, while Erskine improved to 5-7 with the win.
The Brevard College men’s basketball team will jump back into South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, as they will play their fourth straight road game. The Tornados will travel to Wingate, N.C. to do battle with the preseason favorite Wingate University Bulldogs. The tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
