Tornados Use Hot Shooting Night to Route Virginia Intermont, 87-68

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team played perhaps their best game of the young 2007-08 season on Thursday night, as they picked up their second win of the season in a 19-point victory over Virginia Intermont College in Boshamer Gymnasium.

With the win the Tornados improve to 2-8 on the year, while the loss drops Virginia Intermont to 6-6 overall for the season.

The Tornados, who defeated the Cobras in overtime back on November 26, came out shooting the ball lights out on Thursday night, going 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from behind the three-point arc in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Tornados scored first and pushed their early lead to doubled digits at 19-9 at the 12:11 mark in the first half. BC would continuously add to the lead by playing great defense and executing their offense effectively, as they hit on 17-of-26 shot attempts in the first half, while holding the visiting Cobras to 9-of-31 (29 percent) from the floor.

BC would push their lead as high as 22 points in the opening half, before taking a 46-27 lead into the halftime intermission.

Although the two teams played to an even 41-41 second half, BC’s lead never got below 16 points for the remainder of the game, as the Tornados’ intensity on both ends of the court was the difference, as they out shot and out-rebounded the visiting Cobras on the night.

The Tornados shot a season-high 60 percent from the floor, including going 14-of-23 from long distance.

Yet the BC defense also held the Cobras to 35.3 percent shooting for the game, an opponent’s season-low so far this season for the Tornados.

BC was led by a trio of sophomores, as Shane Galloway came off the bench to give the Tornados 19 points, going 7-of-8 from the field and 5-of-5 from behind the three-point line. Jonathan Whitson had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds on the night, while Andrew Freeman had 13 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor for the game.

The Cobras were led by Akeem Price, who had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Jamie Butler, who had 10 points.

The Tornados will jump back into South Atlantic Conference play this weekend, as they will travel to Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon to square off with the Lions for the for the second time this season. The Lions defeated the Tornados, 89-67, earlier this season at the Bobby Lutz Invitational tournament hosted by Pfeiffer University. Saturday’s tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
