Brevard College Hosts Tusculum on Homecoming Weekend
Brevard, N.C. - This weekend is Homecoming Weekend at Brevard College and no one is more ready to come home than the Tornado football team. The Tornados will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss last weekend at Wingate University, in which BC saw a number of turnovers and mental mistakes lead to a Bulldogs’ blowout victory.
The Tornados (1-5) lone win of the season came at home on September 22 versus Chowan University and the team will look to put another victory in the win column this Saturday night, October 13, when they will host the Pioneers of Tusculum College.
The ground game must show up this Saturday versus Tusculum as it was inconsistent at Wingate a week ago. Against the #23 ranked Bulldogs, the Tornados were able to muster up only 107 total offensive yards, rushing for only 81 yards as a team.
The young Tornados squad, which is comprised of mostly sophomores and freshmen will look to take care of the football on the offensive end this week. In their last two losses, BC has turned the ball over eight times including seven fumbles and one interception.
Running backs John Taylor and Tyrone Arrington will be asked to shoulder most of the rushing load this week, as both players are keys to the success of the entire BC offense. Freshman quarterback Trey Wilborn will again be asked to run the triple-option rushing attack, looking to keep the offense on track for all four quarters.
Defensively, the Tornados will look to regain their composure and focus as they will again be faced with a strong passing attack in the Tusculum offense. Look for safeties Joshua Durm and Eric Wright, as well as the cornerbacks, to be tested early and often as Tusculum will look to move the ball down the field through the air.
The Tusculum Pioneers (3-3) come into the game this week having won three straight games, including defeating both Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne the last two weeks. The Pioneers are currently one of three teams that are still undefeated in South Atlantic Conference play.
The Tusculum spread offense is led by quarterback Corey Russell who leads the team in both passing and rushing. Russell has passed for 1,523 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. The junior quarterback has rushed for 146 yards on 68 attempts and three touchdowns as well.
Defensively the Pioneers are led by junior defensive back Jeremy Thompson, who leads the team with three interceptions on the season. The two-time SAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week is also second on the team with 40 tackles and two sacks.
This is the second meeting between the two teams, as Tusculum defeated Brevard, 33-0 a year ago in their first ever meeting.
The game will also be “Youth Recreation Day,” as youth sports participants and coaches are all invited to attend the game at Brevard Memorial Stadium. The players will get into the game for free as long as they wear their game uniforms or jerseys.
The Homecoming Weekend football game will kick-off at 7 p.m. and will have a special halftime presentation as the 2007 Homecoming Queen will be crowned. The shuttle buses will begin running at 5 p.m. and the gates will open at that time as well, two hours prior to the opening kickoff.
