Tornados Prepare For Final Home Game of 2007

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College football team will compete in their final home game on Saturday afternoon, as the Tornados will play host to the No. 13 nationally ranked Catawba Indians at 2 p.m.

The Tornados (2-7) are coming off a tough loss to the Carson-Newman Eagles, in which they found themselves down in a huge hole early. The Eagles ran up a 38 point lead before BC was able to get on the board with a touchdown of their own early in the second half.

The loss last week was definitely a tale of two halves, as the Tornados only managed to gain 32 total yards in the opening half while being outscored 31-0. In the second half, while the BC squad was still outscored 21-13, with the last score for Carson-Newman coming late in the fourth quarter, the Tornados were able to gain a total of 154-yards, moving the ball more effectively and efficiently throughout the second half of play.

Again the Tornado offense will be led by the running attack. For the season BC has rushed for 1,637-yards and 21 touchdowns, while only passing for 635-yards and one score. While the rushing attempts have been spread out over a number of different players, look for junior running back John Taylor to have his number called more in this week’s game versus Catawba. Last week Taylor rushed only seven times for 18-yards. On the season, Taylor has rushed 141 times for 655-yards and 10 touchdowns.

Freshman quarterback Trey Wilborn has improved each and every week in running the BC offense and again will be asked to lead the storm against a highly talented Catawba defense. Last week against a very fast Carson-Newman defense, Wilborn rushed for 91-yards on eight carries and one touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, BC will again look to force the Indians to make some turnovers. The Tornados forced three fumbles last week versus the Eagles and have forced their opponents into 19 turnovers on the season.

The No. 13 ranked Indians are 8-1 this season and are currently ranked fourth in the southeast region for NCAA Division II teams.

The Indians, who are coming off a 45-20 win over Wingate University last week, is a well-balanced offensive team that can both run and pass both efficiently and effectively and are second in total offense in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Indians running attack is led by Kory Fisher, who has carried the ball 122 times for 730-yards and eight touchdowns on the season. Fellow running back George Bell has 488-yards and 16 touchdowns on the year, which is tops in the South Atlantic Conference.

Catawba quarterback Brad Roach heads the passing game for the Indians, as he has completed 59.2 percent of his passes on the season. Roach has thrown for 2,224 yards and 17 touchdowns over the Indians first nine games, and averages a little over 247-yards through the air per contest.

Special teams play will be essential for Coach Hamilton’s squad on Saturday afternoon, as the Indians are first in the SAC in kickoff return yards, averaging 26.6 yards per return.

The home final is also “Church Youth Day”, and the BC athletics department would like to invite Youth Groups of all Churches to come and see the Tornados in action at Brevard Memorial Stadium.

The football game will kick-off at 2 p.m. The shuttle buses will begin running at 12 noon and the gates will open at that time as well, two hours prior to the opening kickoff.
