Tornados Set For Saturday’s Gridiron Match with Chowan

Brevard, N.C. – After having a much needed off-week last weekend, the Tornados are set to storm into Brevard Memorial Stadium on the campus of Brevard High School this Saturday afternoon to do battle with the Hawks of Chowan University.

The Tornados (0-3) will be looking to pick up their first win of the season on Saturday, as they prepare to play in front of the home crowd for only the second time this season. In their last home game, the Tornados lost a 24-21 heartbreaker to the Hawks of Shorter College by way of a last second 51-yard field goal.

This weekend is also Family Weekend for all of the Brevard College students and their families, setting the stage for a special performance from the Tornado student-athletes on the field.

The Tornados are coming into Saturday afternoon’s game refreshed, as they had last week off. “The break was at a good time for us because it allowed some of our guys to nurse some injuries, get healthier and get some much needed rest,” said Coach Hamilton.

Chowan University comes to Brevard after an overtime win last week over Methodist University. The win was the first for the Hawks (1-3) this season and snapped an eighteen game losing streak that dated back to the 2005 season.

The Tornados will look once again to re-establish junior running back John Taylor as part of their running attack on Saturday, as Taylor was taken out of the game plan by the Mars Hill defense in the Tornados 35-7 loss to weeks ago.

Taylor in three games has rushed for 311 yards and six touchdowns. He is the only BC player with over 100 yards on the season.

Freshman Trey Wilborn started at quarterback for the first time this season at Mars Hill and should get the start this week as well. Wilborn led the Tornados on their only scoring drive versus Mars Hill. The freshman will once again be called upon to lead the Tornado offense this week, as he and sophomore Colby McCoy should again share snaps throughout the game.

The BC defense will once again be asked to step up against a Chowan offense that put up over 500 yards versus Methodist University a week ago. Chowan is led by quarterback Joshua Floyd who is leading the Hawks in both passing and rushing this season. Floyd has passed for 519 yards and three touchdowns while also having rushed for 346 yards and one touchdown in Chowan’s first four games.

The Hawks, however use multiple players in their rushing game, as 10 different players have at least one rushing attempt on the season.

Brevard College leads the overall series between the two schools 1-0, having defeated the Hawks 10-5 in Murfreesboro, N.C. last season. The win was not only the first for the Tornados in 2006, but it was also the first victory for the Brevard College program since its re-establishment last season.

The Family Weekend football game will kick-off at 2 p.m. The shuttle buses begin running at 12 p.m. and the gates will open at that time as well, two hours prior to the opening kickoff.
