Tornados Prepare for Road Match-Up with Lenoir-Rhyne
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s football team is coming off their first win of the 2007 season, a 45-7 win over Chowan University last Saturday afternoon, and will look to continue their winning ways this Saturday, September 29, when they will travel to Hickory, N.C. to square off with South Atlantic Conference member Lenoir-Rhyne.
Like the Tornados, the Bears are 1-3 on the season and are coming off their lone victory, a 38-13 win over Benedict College last week.
In last week’s win over Chowan, BC piled up a total of 409 offensive yards, a season high for the Tornados. Brevard’s offense was led by way of the running game, as nine different players picked up a rushing attempt for the game. Sophomore running back Tyrone Arrington picked up 117-yards on 12 carries, posting an average of 9.8 yards per carry. The 117-yard performance was Arrington’s first 100-yard game, and was capped off by a 44-yard scamper into the end zone late in the fourth quarter, sealing the blowout victory for the Tornados.
Junior running back John Taylor rushed 15 times for 76-yards and two touchdowns, while fullback Derek Church added a touchdown of his own, his first of the season.
The Tornados were also able to move the ball through the air on Saturday, as sophomore quarterback Colby McCoy had perhaps his best performance of the season, completing 10 of 17 passes for 152-yards and a touchdown. McCoy hit seven different receivers for the game, including a 47-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jeffrey Adams for the fourth score of the game. McCoy also connected on a game long 48-yard completion to receiver Michael Turner, which set up the Tornados second score of the game.
The Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne will be looking to win their second straight game at home this weekend, after defeating Benedict College 38-13 at home last Saturday.
Like the Tornados Coach Hamilton, Coach Fred Goldsmith is in his first year at Lenoir-Rhyne and will look to rush the ball out of their two-back spread set offense against the Tornado defensive front. The Bears ground game is bolstered by a two-man attack, as freshmen James Pone and Andrew Courman lead the way for the Bears. Pone has rushed for 356-yards and one touchdown on 85 attempts, while Courman has gained 295-yards with four touchdowns on 57 carries.
As a team Lenoir-Rhyne has rushed for 822-yards per game and is averaging 205.5 yards per game on the ground as a team this season.
The BC defense, which held the Chowan Hawk’s offense to 290-yards and only seven points last week, will once again be asked to step up and make plays. With defensive tackle Travis Flynn out for the season with a knee injury, freshman Christian Lumbu will help to anchor the defensive front for the Tornados. Last week, Lumbu posted six solo tackles, four assists and one sack while manning the nose guard position.
Sophomore defensive ends Brandon Rawls, Shawn Tate and Zach Thompson will all be challenged this week as all will see a considerable amount of snaps and running plays from the Bears offense.
The BC linebacker core lead by Stanley Jones and Devin Simpson will once again be asked to make big plays on the defensive side of the ball. Last week, Jones’ interception, which he returned for a 32-yard touchdown, helped to change the tide of the game by taking the air out of the Hawk’s offense and give the Tornados a demanding 21-0 lead early in the first half.
For the season, the Tornados linebacking corp. has caused seven turnovers over the first four games, having forced five fumbles and picked off two passes.
The game on Saturday night will be the first meeting between the Tornados and Lenoir-Rhyne on the gridiron. BC is 0-4 versus South Atlantic Conference members and will look to pick up their first win over a SAC member this week. The kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
