Men’s Golf Takes Second Place at Pace Invitational
Myrtle Beach, S.C.For the second straight tournament, the men’s golf team used a strong day two team effort to come storming back for a strong tournament finish. The Tornados shot a second day combined team score of 298, +10, to take second-place overall in the Pace Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
 
After playing round one in what was very windy conditions and carding a team score of 317, 13 strokes behind the first place team, the Tornados stormed back with a 298, +10, on day two to finish the tournament with a score of 615, +39, which was good enough for second place, only one stroke behind the first-place team Pace University.
 
Again the Tornados were led by senior David Martinez, who shot a second round 69, -3, which was the lowest round of the tournament. Martinez finished with a two day score of 145, +1, and battled for first-place with Michael Dominici of Pace University before falling in a playoff on the second sudden death hole to finish in second-place overall.
 
Martinez has now placed second overall as an individual in back to back tournaments.
 
“David Martinez has made great strides in improving his golf game,” stated head coach David Nelson. “He was our best player in the fall and continues to lead us in every key statistical category this spring. His 73 stroke average in tournament play is the lowest since I’ve been coaching the program.”
 
BC’s Myles Johnston turned in rounds of 75 and 78 to finish with a two round combined score of 153, +9, which was good enough to place him in a tie with two other players at sixth-place overall.
 
After a round one score of 85, +13, Grant Carnie bounced back with a strong performance on day two, carding a 72, even par, giving him a two day tournament score of 157, +13, placing him in a tie for 16th-place overall.
 
Brevard’s Craig Galloway rounded out the scoring for the Tornados, as he finished in a five-way tie for 28th-place with a tournament score of 162, +18.
 
With their second-place finish, the Tornados, who played the tournament with only four players, finished ahead of eight other NCAA Division II schools.
 
The host school, Pace University finished first with a score of 614, -38. Dowling (622), UMass Lowell (625) and Post (632) rounded out the top five.
 
“I was very proud of my players and their performance this week,” commented head coach David Nelson. “To finish second in a very strong NCAA Division II tournament is a boost to our confidence as we approach the SAC tournament in April.”
 
The Tornados will look to continue their winning ways, when they will return to the links on March 31 and April 1 where they will compete in the J. Ralph Hargett Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
