Men’s Golf Ties for First Place at Montreat Fall Invitational
Hendersonville, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s golf team gave a glimpse as to just how good they can be, as they finished in a tie for first-place with North Greenville University at the Montreat Fall Invitational tournament hosted by Montreat College at the Crooked Creek Golf Club in Hendersonville, N.C.
The Tornados carded combined two-day team score of 594, to finish tied for first out of 12 teams. Tennessee Wesleyan took third-place with a score of 605.
BC came into the tournament having won it the last four times and did not disappoint this season, as on Monday the Tornados posted a 293, +5, the lowest team score in the history of the program for one round. Brevard also finished with a two day total of 594, also a team best for two rounds.
Having trailed the Crusaders of North Greenville by three strokes going into round two on Tuesday, the Tornados quickly made up the difference forcing North Greenville to post two birdies on the final hole to tie BC.
However, North Greenville was awarded the first-place trophy based on a card playoff in which they break the tie by looking at the fifth man’s score or the score that is thrown out.
Sophomore Grant Carnie finished the tournament under par at 143, -1, carding rounds of 70 and 73 placing him on the all-tournament team. Senior David Martinez also earned all-tournament honors with a two day total of 148, +4, while junior Myles Johnston also played well just missing a spot on the all-tournament team by one stroke. He posted a two day total of 149, +5.
“I was proud of our team in that we finished in a tie with a NCAA DII team that made the NCAA playoffs last season,” commented Coach David Nelson.
The highlight of the tournament came on Monday, when sophomore Thomas Bush shot a hole-in-one on hole number 15, a par 3 at 175 yards.
The men’s golf team will return to the links next week, September 24 and 25, when they will participate in the Jack Shadwick Invitational hosted by Southern Wesleyan University at the Cross Creek Plantation Golf Club in Seneca, S.C. The tournament field will consist of 18 teams, 13 of which will be NCAA DII opponents.
