Men’s Soccer Falls to Winthrop University
Rock Hill, S.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team stepped out of South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday night to face an even bigger challenge in the Winthrop University Eagles, an NCAA Division I school who reached the NCAA National Championship tournament last season.
With the 9-1 loss, the Tornados fall to 3-10-1 for the year, while Wingate, the Big South pre-season favorites, improve to 7-2-1.
The Eagles flexed their muscles early, scoring five goals in the first 45 minutes to take a demanding lead into the halftime period. The five first have goals came by three different players, as Saidi Isaac led the offensive surge with three goals of his own.
After the Eagles added four more goals to put the game out of reach, BC showed their true character and refused to give up as in the 78th minute senior Owen Carson blasted a shot from 25 yards out past the Winthrop goal keeper and into the back of the net, ultimately spoiling the Eagles shutout. The goal was Carson’s third on the season.
In only the third start of his collegiate career, BC goal keeper freshman Nicholas Banks faced his toughest challenge yet in the Eagles, but still managed to gather in four saves for the match.
The Tornados will stay on the road for their next contest on Thursday, October 11, when they will travel to Tigerville, S.C. to do battle with the Crusaders of North Greenville University. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
