Tornados Drop Warren Wilson, 2-1
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team was in action on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Warren Wilson College 2-1 in what was a very physical and highly contested match.
The win bumps the Tornados to 4-11-1, while Warren Wilson falls to 4-7-2 on the year.
The Tornados got on the board first, as their relentless pursuit on goal paid off as Fernando Sandoval pushed one across the goal line in the 29th minute. Douglas Neil put a header on frame that was blocked by Warren Wilson’s keeper Brett Buffington. Sandoval went hard into the box after the rebound putting a diving one-touch shot attempt just between Buffington and another defender to give the Tornados an early 1-0 lead.
The Tornados would take the 1-0 lead into the halftime period, as they control the ball for most of the first half attempting 13 shots and putting nine of them on goal.
The physical play heated up in the second half yet BC continued to hold on to their lead. In the 82nd minute, Kevin Oates beat a Warren Wilson defender to the ball at the top of the box. Oates then hit an open Robert Wool on the top right of the box who then put a shot past the diving keeper to push the lead to 2-0. The goal was Wool’s first of the season.
However, Warren Wilson did not give up as Luke Bernard put a shot into the goal past BC keeper Nicholas Banks in the 83:36 to spoil the Tornados shutout.
The teams combined for 32 fouls and eight yellow cards for the match.
BC also out shot their opponents 22-6, while also taking an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The men’s soccer team will return to action on Thursday, October 18, when they will take on Coker College on the Tornados home turf, the soccer field on the campus of Brevard College. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
