Men’s Soccer Falls in Final Minutes at St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team lost its first game of the season on Wednesday night, falling in the final minutes of regulation, in what was a very well played match, to St. Andrews Presbyterian College 3-2.

With the win the Knights improve to 2-1, while the Tornados fall to 1-1.

St. Andrews led off the scoring as in the ninth minute Eric Gomez found the back of the net, taking a center pass from teammate Brian Humphrey, to give the St. Andrews an early 1-0 lead.

The Tornados played hard for the first 45 minutes, but was unable to get a goal as St. Andrews held on to their 1-0 lead through intermission.

The second half started out the same as the first, as St. Andrews’ Chris Weedon took a pass from fellow classmate Curtis Kiyabu and put a shot pass the goal line and into the back of the net giving the Knights a 2-0 lead.

Brevard College would not roll over though as in the 61st minute junior Kyle Hamilton put the Tornados on the board, converting on a penalty kick and cutting the lead to 2-1.

Fellow teammate Miro Mustonen knotted the game up with only 15 minutes remaining in the second half, ripping a corner kick from Kyle Stanforth into the goal.

With the time winding down and the score tied up at 2-2, St. Andrew’s Mickey Padron, Jr. broke a late tie, scoring the game-winning goal in the final two minutes to lift host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 3-2 men’s soccer victory over Brevard College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tornados’ men’s soccer team will not have long to rest as they return to action in just two days on Friday, August 31, when they will face off with Emory & Henry in Emory, Va. at 4 p.m.
