Men’s Soccer Plays Mars Hill to a 2-2 Draw
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team took on SAC member Mars Hill on Tuesday afternoon, playing in what was a very physical match to a 2-2 draw after two overtime periods.
With the tie the Tornados move to 2-7-1 on the year, while Mars Hill goes to 5-4-1.
The Tornados got on the scoreboard first when in the 20th minute BC’s Kyle Stanforth put a laser shot from the right side of the field, off the hands of Mars Hill’s keeper Sean Merfeld and into the back of the net giving the Tornados an early 1-0 lead. Fellow teammate Kenneth Bryan III picked up the assist on the goal.
The visiting Lions answered back with a goal of their on a little over a minute later, when at the 20:31 mark Nick Cartwright corralled a rebound off of BC keeper Trevor Redpath and put a shot into the net knotting the score up at 1-1.
The Tornados took back the lead at the 29:51 mark of the first half when BC was awarded a penalty kick as Mars Hill got called for a foul in the penalty box. Sophomore co-captain Ian Townson made good on the penalty kick, putting the Tornados back out in front.
Mars Hill would tie up the score again in the 67th minute, when Jared Hopton gathered in a loose ball at the top of the box and put a shot just inside the front left post and into the back of the net past a diving Redpath.
The teams would play a very physical last 30 minutes, yet neither team was able to push across the game winning goal forcing the score to remain at 2-2 at the end of regulation, forcing an overtime period.
Each overtime period saw both teams attempting a number of shots to try to win the game, however, Redpath proved to be strong in-between the posts for BC as he stopped four shots in the extra frames to help preserve the 2-2 tie.
The Brevard College men’s team will be back in action tomorrow at home, as they will welcome Erskine College to the campus of Brevard College. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
