Men’s Soccer Falls to Ranked Newberry, 5-0
Newberry, S.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team opened up their South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, as they traveled to Newberry, S.C. to face off with the Newberry Indians. Newberry is ranked No. 5 in the Appalachian Region in the latest adidas/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll.
Both teams came into today’s game with only one loss on the season, however, the Indians were able to come away with the 5-0 win, dropping the Tornados to 2-2 for the year. Newberry improved to 4-1.
Newberry got on the board early in the first half and never looked back, as they blanked the Tornados scoring five goals for the match.
Newberry’s Seth Addison scored the first goal of the game at the 3:25 mark, knocking in a header from a Shane Abbott throw-in, giving the Indians an early 1-0 lead.
Abbott got his second assist of the game at the 28:56 mark when he hit Debola Ogunseye with a pass in the box, who then put the ball past the Tornados keeper Trevor Redpath for the goal.
The Indians other goals came by way of Scott Busbee, Jovon Rochford, and Seth Addison, all in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
BC’s Redpath posted eight saves for the match, as he faced 23 shots from the Newberry squad over the 90 minute span.
The Tornados were out shot by Newberry, 23-6 for the match.
The men’s soccer team will look to bounce back this Friday, September 7, when they will return home to host Clayton State at 4 p.m.
