Brevard College Men’s Tennis Falls At Newberry, 8-1
Newberry, S.C. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team traveled to Newberry, S.C. on Thursday afternoon, where the Tornados were dropped by the Newberry College Indians 8-1 at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
The Newberry Indians, which are ranked No. 9 in the ITA Southeast Region, swept all three doubles matches from the Tornados to take an early 3-0 lead.
The closest match in doubles play was at the No. 1 doubles position where BC’s Jared Fisher and Cole Altizer battled hard against Newberry’s Daryl Van Vuuren and Jeremy Smith before ultimately falling 8-5.
In singles play, the Tornados picked up one win, as Andrew Thompson scored a walkover victory over Newberry’s Maxim Sukharev at the No. 1 singles spot.
At the No. 5 position, BC’s Shane Apps battled back from a first set 6-0 loss, to push Newberry’s Felipe Sobrinho to the limit in the second set before falling 7-5.
The loss drops the Tornados to 1-5 on the year, while Newberry improves to 4-4 with the win.
The men’s tennis team have a very busy week ahead, as they will play four matches in four days on their Spring Break Trip to Hilton Head, S.C. next week. Brevard’s first match will be on Sunday, March 16, when they will take on Nazareth College at 12 noon.
