North Alabama Defeats Tornados in Men’s Tennis Action

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team played their third match in three days on Thursday afternoon, as the Tornados fell to the University of North Alabama, 6-3.

The Tornados took an early 2-1 lead over the Lions, as BC picked up a win at the No. 1 doubles spot and a forfeit victory at the No. 3 position.

At the No. 1 doubles spot, the BC duo of Cole Altizer and Jared Fisher were able to hold off the North Alabama team of Carlos Cardenas and Zac Bereznicki to come away with a 9-7 win.

With North Alabama fielding only five players, the Tornados team of Shane Apps and Ben Allweil picked up a forfeit victory at the No. 3 doubles position, which gave BC an early 2-1 lead.

However, in singles play the Lions came storming back to win five of the six singles bouts, with the only BC win coming by way of a North Alabama forfeit.

BC’s Allweil picked up the forfeit victory at the No. 6 position to give BC an early 3-1 lead.

Yet the Lions did not give up and battled with the Tornados in the other five singles matches to come from behind and score the 6-3 victory.

Brevard’s Apps played well at the No. 5 spot, forcing Martin Siejka of North Alabama to a second set tiebreaker before falling in straight sets 6-3, 6-7 (10-6).

“Overall this was a good effort for our guys. We were a bit flat in doubles and it hurt us,” commented head coach Paul Thomson. “We played pretty well against a very good team today. We got an early lead with the win at No. 1 doubles, but they stepped up in singles play.”

With the loss BC falls to 6-8 on the season.

The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, March 29, as they will play not one but two matches at home. The first match will be at 9 a.m. as BC will host Spartanburg Methodist College. BC will then turn around and play Maryville College at 4 p.m.
