Shorthanded Men’s Tennis Team Falls in Fall Finale
Franklin Springs, G.A. – The Brevard College men’s tennis team wrapped up their 2007 fall season on Saturday afternoon, as they faced off with Emmanuel College in Georgia.
The Tornados were shorthanded for the match, only fielding four players for the fall event and forfeiting three matches and ultimately falling to Emmanuel, 5-4.
At the No. 2 doubles position, the tandem of junior Sam Johnston and freshman Shane Apps defeated Emmanuel’s J.B. Workman and Matt Lynch, 8-1.
Down 3-1 after doubles play and then having to forfeit two matches in singles action, BC found themselves down 5-1 but continued to battle hard, winning three of the four singles matches.
At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Andrew Thompson defeated Colby Phillips in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, while BC’s Apps blanked Emmanuel College’s Workman, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 singles slot.
Senior Justin Craig battled hard to win the first set 7-5 over Lanny Farmer of Emmanuel before cruising in the second set 6-2 to win at the No. 4 position.
“The four healthy guys we had play, played better this week,” commented Coach Thomson. “We are looking forward to having our full squad together for the spring.”
The men’s tennis team will take the winter off and will start up their spring season on Friday, February 8, when they will host Erskine College on the campus of Brevard College.
