Tornados Compete at Appalachian State University Limited Open Indoor Meet
Boone, N.C. – Both the men’s and women’s track & field teams had a number of individuals compete at the Appalachian State University Limited Open Indoor Meet on Friday afternoon at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C.
Brevard competed in the event versus a number NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools including the likes of Wake Forest, Appalachian State, East Tennessee State, Gardner-Webb, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Asheville, South Carolina State, Mars Hill, Carson-Newman, Queens, Milligan and King College.
On the men’s side of the meet, junior Brandon Hopkins had the best finish of the day for BC, turning in an 11th-place showing in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:06.91.
Freshman sprinter Justin Fleming took 12th-place in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 23.10. Fleming also had a top-20 finish in the 55 meter dash event, turning in a time of 6.82, finishing just ahead of fellow teammate Austin Williams who took 19th with a time of 6.84.
Sophomore Shaton Pratt had two top-20 finishes on the day, as he took 13th overall in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.79 and finished in 15th-place in the 200 meter dash with his time of 23.42.
In the 400 meter dash event, sophomore Stephen Dawson turned in a time of 57.11, which was good enough for 13th-place overall. Dawson also took 16th overall in the 55 meter hurdles, as he turned in a time of 8.59.
Senior Justin Holstein and freshman Tiffen Tapia finished 21st and 22nd respectively in the 1 mile run event, as Holstein turned in a time of 5:14.99, finishing ahead of Tapia’s time of 5:26.00.
Freshman Dominc Simon and sophomore Stanley Jones both competed in the 55 meter dash, as Simon turned in a time of 6.98 which was good enough for 27th overall, while Jones took 32nd-place with his time of 7.52.
Simon also competed in the 200 meter dash, finishing with a time of 25.82 which placed him in 34th-place overall.
The meet on Friday was the second and final indoor track and field competition that the Tornados have competed in this season.
Both the women’s and men’s track and field teams will open up their 2008 outdoor season on March 15, when they will compete at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.
