Bill Wilson
Head Coach Women’s Basketball
Bill Wilson Begins his third season as the head coach for the Tornado Women’s Basketball Program.
Wilson is no stranger to leading a team in transition. Brevard is the second college women’s basketball team in four years that he has guided through the transition into the NCAA Division II ranks. Wilson has brought a very fundamentally sound and accurate shooting approach to the women’s program at Brevard. Last season the Tornado’s got their first taste of NCAA division II competition and proved in just one season they can compete by defeating three division II opponents and coming within one minute of knocking off South Atlantic Conference opponent Lincoln Memorial. Under Wilson’s command last season the Tornados had two players receive NCAA Division II All-Independent accolades.
Prior to Wilson’s arrival at Brevard College he was the head coach at Upper Iowa University for nine years. During his tenure at UIU, he became the schools all-time career leader in wins. His teams defeated five nationally ranked teams during his tenure; set 37 individual/team records; and produced six All-Conference players and six 1000 point scorers. In 2002 he became the first women’s coach in UIU athletics history to be named coach of the year when he was named Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association District 8 Coach of the Year following the best season in UIU history. Wilson also directed the programs transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II.
Wilson has coached basketball on the international level as well, coaching in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy for USA Athletes International, an organization dedicated to providing educational and competitive opportunities for student/athletes. Wilson has posted a 6-1 record against foreign competition.
His achievements as leader extend beyond the basketball court as well. While at UIU & BC, Wilson’s teams have maintained a 100-percent graduation rate and consistently maintained the highest team grade-point-average of any athletics team. Before arriving at UIU, he worked as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and as an assistant coach with the Slippery Rock men’s program which finished the 1989-90 season ranked no. 2 nationally in NCAA Division II.
He attained his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University and earned his masters in education and athletics administration from Slippery Rock.
