Bulldogs Use Defensive Pressure to Down Tornados, 84-69
 
Wingate, NC – The Brevard College women’s basketball team played their third straight road contest on Saturday afternoon, falling to SAC foe Wingate University, 84-69 in Cuddy Arena.
 
The Tornados stayed close for most of the first half of play, but were plagued by turnovers which allowed the Wingate Bulldogs to pull away for good midway through the second half.
 
BC would jump out to an early 4-3 lead at the 17:20 mark of the opening half, their last lead of the game as the Bulldogs would go on a 24-4 run over the next six minutes of play to pull away from Brevard with 10:59 remaining in the first half.
 
The Tornados would cut the Wingate lead to as close as 10 points on a number of occasions in the remainder of the half only to have the Bulldogs answer and maintain a double-digit lead heading into the half 42-30.
 
In the second half of play, BC was bothered by the defensive pressure of the Bulldogs as Wingate forced 12 Tornado turnovers which led to a number of easy transition baskets for the home team.
 
Wingate’s lead reached as high as 26 points at the 8:53 mark as Wingate continued to put pressure on the Tornados on both ends of the floor.
 
BC settled down and began to run their offense more effectively in the closing minutes of the second half, cutting the lead down to 15 points at the final buzzer, 84-69.
 
Four players scored in double-digits for the Tornados, as freshman forward Amanda Whitaker led the way with 19 points in 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Samantha Winn had 16 points, while sophomore Lindsay Thrift added 11 points and senior Holly Krogman contributed 11 points for the game.
 
Wingate was led by Kate Edwards, who finished the contest with 17 points, connecting on 4-of-7 from the three-point line. Anna Atkinson had 12 points and five assists on the game, while C.C. Brooks came off the bench to score 11 points.
 
For the game, Brevard had 25 turnovers while forcing the Bulldogs to commit 13. Wingate had 15 steals on the game to go along with 21 fast break points.
 
The Tornados fall to 5-9 overall, while Wingate improved to 10-6 with the win.
 
The Brevard College women’s basketball team will return home next Monday, January 21, when they will step out of their tough SAC slate to take on Converse College at 6 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium on the campus of Brevard College. The Tornados defeated Converse, 69-59, in an earlier visit to Spartanburg, S.C. back on December 6.
