Krogman’s Buzzer-Beater Pushes BC Past Virginia State, 62-61
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team home opener was not short of excitement as the outcome of the game came down to the last second of the second half, as senior Holly Krogman hit a leaning lay-up at the buzzer to give Brevard the 62-61 victory over Virginia State University.
The win pushes the Tornados to .500 on the year at 2-2, while Virginia State falls to 1-3.
BC jumped out to an early first half lead of 23-11 with eight minutes to play in the first half and pushed their lead up 19 points with only five minutes in the half.
However, VSU went on a run of their own in the final minutes of the first period, cutting the lead to 12, 39-27, at the halftime intermission.
The second half of play saw the Tornados struggle with foul trouble, as at one point midway through the half BC had three of its starters with at least three fouls or more.
With 11 minutes to go in the game, the visiting Lady Trojans tied the game up at 45-45, as they continued to connect on the free throws giving to them by Tornados foul count.
In the final four minutes of play, the lead changed hands three times and the score was tied on two other occasions as neither team could put the other one away.
BC sophomore Samantha Winn hit a tough lay-up on the left side of the basket to put the Tornados up 60-58 with 34 seconds remaining in the contest.
However, VSU did not panic as after a timeout the Lady Trojans took their time, working the clock down to: 06 seconds, when Katania Walker hit a three-pointer to put the visiting Trojans on top, 61-60.
Yet BC would get the ball as Millie Wharton dribbled the ball down the sideline where she found a cutting Holly Krogman who gathered the ball in and shot a leaning one-handed lay-up over a VSU defender. As the ball hit the backboard, the horn went off only to have the ball swish through the net to give the Tornados the 62-61 win.
Wharton led the Tornados with 18 points, while Krogman contributed with 15 points of her own. Fellow senior Courtney Brandon had nine points.
VSU was led by Walker who had 17 points, including going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Nia Thomspon had nine points, as she too was perfect from the charity stripe.
The Tornados (2-2) will continue its three-game home stand on Thursday, November 29, when they will host Milligan College at 6 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium.
