Lady Indians Defeat Tornados, 77-65 in Women’s Basketball Action
Salisbury, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team continued their current three-game road trip on Wednesday night, as they voyaged to Salisbury, N.C. to do battle with the Lady Indians of Catawba College. The Tornados tried to overcome a slow start, but ultimately fell to Catawba, 75-66.
Brevard was slow to come out of the gates, as the Lady Indians jumped out to an early 14-2 lead in the first four minutes of play. However, the Tornados settled down and found their offense, making a run of their own over the next nine minutes to outscore Catawba, 20-8, and knot the score up at 22-22 at the 8:41 mark.
The half of runs would continue, as the Lady Indians went on a 9-2 run of their own over the next three minutes, taking a 31-24 point edge. A lay-up by BC freshman Kelsey Sill at the 4:34 mark ended the Tornados scoring drought and cut the Catawba lead to five at 31-26.
The Lady Indians would use a late half surge to finish out the opening half on a 10-0 run, leaving the score at 41-26 heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, both teams played fairly even as Catawba pushed their lead to 20 points at the 15:42 mark, only to have Brevard storm back to cut the lead to 12 points, 60-48, with just under 10:00 to play on a jump shot by sophomore Lindsay Thrift.
The Tornados would cut the lead to 11 points on two occasions in the final 5:10 to play, however, BC would not get any closer as the Lady Indians held on down the stretch for the 77 - 65 win.
The Tornados had three players in double-figures in scoring led by senior guard Courtney Brandon’s 14 point effort. Sophomore Samantha Winn added 11 points and pulled down six rebounds, while freshman forward Amanda Whitaker had 10 points.
Catawba was lead by junior guard Cameron Clark’s 20 points. Senior Cristi Bartlett had 16 points, while NeKeithia Howard added 11 points.
The two leading scorers for both teams, which were second and third respectively in the entire conference in scoring, were held well under their averages as BC’s Holly Krogman was held to seven points, while Catawba’s Howard had only 11 points for the Lady Indians.
For the game both teams shot well from the floor as the Tornados shot 50 percent, connecting on 23-of-46 field goal attempts, while the Lady Indians finished the contest shooting 50.8 percent going 31-of-61 from the floor.
The loss drops BC to 5-8 on the year, while Catawba improves to 7-8 overall with the win.
