Tornados Fall to Lenoir-Rhyne, 59-47 in Women’s Basketball Action

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team returned home on Wednesday night, as they hosted SAC foe Lenoir-Rhyne at Boshamer Gymnasium. The Tornados battled hard in what was a tough defensive struggle before ultimately falling to the Bears’, 59-47.

The loss drops Brevard to 5-6 on the season, while the win bumps the Bears’ to 9-4 overall.

After the Bears’ of Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, the Tornados settled down on the offensive end, running off five unanswered points of their own to cut the Bears’ lead to one at 6-5.

The two teams would trade baskets over the next five minutes of play, with neither team able to go on a run and pull away from their opponents. However, a three-pointer by L-R’s Meredith Webster at the 8:17 mark of the first half would kick-off a 16-5 run for the Bears’ over the next five minutes to push their lead to 11 points at the 3:21 mark.

The Tornados would again go back-and-forth with the Bears’ for the remainder of the half, with Lenoir-Rhyne able to hold on to a 34-24 halftime lead.

Despite the Tornados pressure zone-defense which held Lenoir-Rhyne to 24.1 percent shooting from the field in the second half, the Bears’ were able to outscore the Tornados 25-23 in the final 20 minutes to seal a 59-47 road victory.

The Tornados, which shot 47.4 percent in the first half, were 6-of-19 for 31.6 percent in the second half, in what proved to be a very physical 20 minutes of play by both teams.

BC was led by senior standout Holly Krogman with 14 points. Sophomore Lindsay Thrift had 10 points in her first start this season.

The Bears’ were led by sophomore Meredith Webster who had a game high 16 points, hitting four three-point baskets. Junior forward Jackie Williams had a double-double, as she had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
