Tornados Suffer Cold Shooting Night in Loss To Carson-Newman
Jefferson City, T.N. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team suffered a cold shooting night on Wednesday night, falling to the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman, 72-50 in Jefferson City, T.N.
The Tornados knotted the score up at 3-3 on a three-pointer by senior Holly Krogman less than a minute into the game, yet could never quite get their shooting going as they trailed for the rest of the game.
After the Lady Eagles pushed the lead up to 12 points, 18-6, at the 13:44 mark, the Tornados cut the lead to as close as six points in the first half on two made free throws by sophomore Samantha Winn around the seven minute mark.
However, that was as close as Brevard got in the first half of play, as the Tornados shot 25 percent from the floor, including going 3-of-20 from the three-point arc, and trailed 33-20 at the halftime intermission.
In the second 20 minutes of play, the Tornados again struggled from the floor while trying to play catch up to the Lady Eagles.
Carson-Newman was able to push their lead up to 20 points on three separate occasions throughout the second half, as the Lady Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor, going 14-of-28.
The Tornados cold shooting night continued into the second half, as BC hit 9-of-29 shot attempts in the final half, with 20 of those shot attempts coming from long distance as the Lady Eagles packed it in on the defensive end in order to stop the Tornados’ set offense.
BC’s Krogman led all scorers with 21 points on the day, as she was 7-of-15 from the field. Winn was the only other Tornado in double figures, as she had 10 points on the night to go along with her team-high five rebounds.
Preseason all-conference selection forward Shari Buford led the Lady Eagles with 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting for the game. Fellow post player Emily Mason had 17 points to go along with her game-high 13 rebounds.
The loss drops Brevard to 8-16 on the season, while the Lady Eagles improve to 13-11 overall with the win.
The Tornados will next be in action on Saturday night, when they will travel back to the “Volunteer State” to take on the Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College at 6 p.m. in Greeneville, T.N.
