Tornados Try to Overcome Halftime Deficit, but Fall to the Lady Eagles
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team suffered a cold shooting night on Wednesday night, as they tried to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit before ultimately falling to the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman, 72-53.
The first half saw BC jump out to an early 3-0 lead after a three-point basket was knocked down by freshman Amber Roberts, who was making her first career start. However, that would be the only lead that the Tornados would have for the game, as less than 20 seconds later Carson-Newman hit a three-pointer of their own to tie the game at 3-3 and would not look back.
The Carson-Newman lead would not reach its highest until the halftime break, as BC hung around for most of the opening half despite shooting only 30.8 percent from the floor. The Eagles connected on 18-of-35 attempts, shooting 51.4 percent from the field in the first half, with 24 of their 42 first half points coming in the paint.
With the Tornados down 42-25 at the halftime intermission, BC’s cold night shooting the ball continued in the second half.
The Lady Eagles would push their lead to 24 points at the 9:35 mark, however, the Tornados would not give up battling back to cut the lead down to 16 with 3:41 remaining in the contest before trading baskets in the final minutes of regulation.
The Tornados shot 29.6 percent from the field in the second half and 30.2 percent for the game, the worst shooting night at home in Boshamer Gymnasium on the season for Coach Wilson’s squad.
Senior co-captain Holly Krogman was the only Tornado starter in double-figures on Wednesday night, scoring 14 points while pulling down a team-high five rebounds. Freshman forward Kelsey Sill came off the BC bench to score 13 points in only 16 minutes of play, going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Eagles had four players in double-figures led by Ashley Tipton’s 17 points. Fellow starter Angela Volentine had 15 points, while forward Shari Buford added 14 points down low for the Lady Eagles. Fellow forward Emily Mason had a double-double on the night, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with her 11 point performance.
The loss drops BC to 6-10 on the season, as the Tornados remain winless against the South Atlantic Conference. With the win Carson-Newman improves to 9-8 overall.
The Brevard College women’s basketball team will be back in action this Saturday afternoon, when they will travel to Tigerville, S.C. to face off with the Lady Crusaders of North Greenville University. The tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
