Women’s Basketball Falls to Pfeiffer in Season Opener

Greeneville, T.N. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team opened up its 2007-08 regular season on Friday night, as they took on Pfeiffer University in the Lady Pioneer Classic in Greeneville, T.N. hosted by Tusculum College.

The Tornados battled hard, keeping the Lady Falcons in reach for the game’s entirety before ultimately falling 65-56 in their season opener.

BC opened up the game with a three-pointer by freshman Amanda Whitaker to take an early 3-0 lead, the Tornados largest lead of the game as the first half saw the Tornados and Falcons go back and forth with neither team able to run away with a large lead.

Despite the Tornados poor free throw shooting (4-of-16, 25%) and 21 turnovers, BC found themselves only down 30-24 at the half, as they shot 50% from the floor.  The Tornados defense kept the score close in the first half, as they held the Lady Falcons scoreless from behind the three-point line (0-of-8) and forced them into 14 turnovers over the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Tornados took a 3-point lead with 14 minutes remaining in the half, yet it would be BC’s last lead of the game as the Lady Falcons held off the Tornados the final 14 minutes of play to seal the victory.

Senior Holly Krogman led the Tornados, scoring a game-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Krogman was only one rebound shy of recording a double-double, as she pulled down nine rebounds in 33 minutes of play.

Sophomore guard Samantha Winn had nine points and five rebounds, while freshman forward Amanda Whitaker recorded nine points of her own in her college debut.

For the game the Tornados shot 45.7 % from the floor, as they connected on 21-of-46 attempts. However, BC shot a dismal 43.5 % (10-of-23) from the charity stripe and had 35 turnovers for the game.

Pfeiffer was led by Laura Brittingham who netted a team high 25 points for the game, including shooting 11-of-13 from the free throw line.

The Tornados (0-1) will continue their play in the Lady Pioneers Classic tournament tomorrow afternoon, when they will take on Livingstone College at 2 p.m.
