Brevard College has made great leaps in its second season of mountain bike racing. In one year we have come from a team in its beginning stages to one that is competitive on the national level. The team capped off its first full season of racing by sending six riders to compete in the Collegiate National Championships. Tristan Cowie placed second in the cross country event, and 6th in the overall omnium, in spite of not racing any of the gravity events. Matt St. Marie and Joanne Tuttle placed 14th in the men’s and women’s cross country respectively. These and other strong results from Gattis Tyler, Nan Pugh, and Danny Cesare put the team in 9th place for the overall omnium. Brevard Closed out the season ranked 3rd in our conference, with several wins and almost 2 dozen top 5 A Category finishes during the season. With an emphasis on team development and growth, we are confident that we will improve on our level of competition significantly in the years to come, and hope to be in the running for a national title within a couple of years.
Brevard College fields a competitive women’s mountain biking and cycling team that competes in the Southeastern Cycling Conference, part of the National Collegiate Cycling Association. Brevard College Cycling recognizes the importance of women to the sport of cycling as well as to our collegiate team. A strong women’s team can carry an entire team to collegiate nationals. Our program is looking for student athletes who are passionate about cycling and willing to invest the time and energy necessary to take our program to the next level. Cycling at Brevard College is recognized as a varsity sport at which allows us funding, resources, and scholarship money that many other club level programs lack.
The challenging terrain, sunny and mild climate, and the local cycling community found in the Brevard area are highly conducive to a variety of year-round training and competitive opportunities. In addition to a full collegiate schedule, the region offers a full season of both mountain and road racing. Local pro events such as the Tour de Georgia and U.S. Pro Championships in Greenville, SC, bring world-class competition and great cycling exposure to the area.
