Women’s Soccer Falls to Southern Wesleyan, 2-0
Central, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s soccer team played their first game of the 2007 underneath lights on Thursday night, as they fell to the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University 2-0 in Central, S.C.
SWU jumped out quickly as Christina Webb fired a shot that Brevard goal keeper Sydney Douglas stopped but was unable to control. The Warrior’s Elisabeth Gunnarsdottir took advantage of the rebound in front of the goal and buried it in the back of the net in the seventh minute giving the home team an early 1-0 lead.
SWU would add an insurance goal less than two minutes later, as Katla Gudjonsdottir bent a corner kick over Douglas outstretched hands and into the net at the far post for the 2-0 lead.
After two goals in less than nine minutes, the final 81 minutes were played without a single goal being scored.
Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities with the Lady Warriors out shooting the Tornados 16-9.
The loss drops the Tornados to 3-4 for the year, while Southern Wesleyan improves to 5-2 with the win.
The women’s soccer team will return to action this Saturday, September 15, when they will play host to Carson-Newman. The match is slated to kick-off at 2 p.m. on the campus of Brevard College.
