Women’s Soccer Plays Anderson University to a 0-0 Draw

Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s soccer team played their final home game of the 2007 season on Tuesday, as they hosted the Trojans of Anderson University on a very windy afternoon.

After two extra overtime periods, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

The tie moves the Tornados to 4-12-1 on the year, while the Trojans go to 6-5-2 for the season.

Both teams played a very even first half, as neither team could put a goal on the board. Each team took three shots in the first 45 minutes, with Anderson putting two on goal only to have them denied by BC keeper Sydney Douglas.

While the play picked up in the second half, it still remained a defensive struggle for both teams with each goal keeper refusing to let a shot go through. The Tornados again were able to get off three shots, while BC keeper Douglas faced seven shots in the second frame, stopping the two that were on goal to help preserve the 0-0 tie and force the game into an extra frame.

In the second half, the Tornados best chance to score came in the 79th minute. Kelly Harris put a laser shot off a direct free kick from 30-yards out right on frame. The Trojans keeper Calle McCallister blocked the shot but the ball bounded off her chest and out of her hands right in front of the net. BC’s Courtney Sofferin got to the ball first and made a sliding shot that just went high of the goal.

In the two overtime frames, again the defense would control play, as the two teams combined for only one shot over the extra 20 minutes.

In goal, Douglas corralled six saves for the match.

The women’s team will have almost a two week break before they return to action on Saturday, October 27, when they will wrap up their South Atlantic Conference schedule with a game at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
